Step 3

Putting Words and Pictures Together

Writer/artist Scott McCloud once noted that in comics, “Words and pictures are like partners in a dance and each one takes turns leading.”1 You might have a great story, but if it is poorly illustrated, the experience for your audience will be lessened. Even if you are not drawing your comic pages yourself, you should understand how a good comic page is composed. If you’re working full script, you will also be detailing page and panel layouts for your artist, so you will need to know some of the mechanics of page layout. You will also likely be editing your project yourself, so you will need to recognize what makes the art strong and what makes it weak. Any mistakes or inconsistencies with your storytelling goals will have to be marked and sent back to the artist for correction.
